AU Outline 3.0 **NEW QUIRK**
Timeline
Midoriya Izuku was born without a Quirk and his timeline is the same as canon up through middle school until the last ten months. The day Bakugo burned his notebook is the day that everything changed. He met All Might as he did after he was attacked by the slime villain and latched onto his leg to follow him. He asked All Might his question, could someone without a Quirk be a hero? The answer was the same and that he probably couldn't. All Might told him to try and join the police and left him. The explosion off in town caught his attention but as he made his way through the streets, his feet taking him toward the scuffle, he ran into someone. Deku dropped his book and Shigaraki picked it up. The villain flipped through the book and commented on the notes. He glared at the autograph from All Might. The two began to talk and moved toward the fight. When they arrived, Izuku spotted Katsuki trapped inside the monster.
However, Shigaraki grabbed his shoulder with four fingers and started to speak. He pulled Izuku's attention from Katsuki to the heroes, speaking loudly about how the heroes were doing nothing. He made observations about how heroes, when they can't help, standby and stop trying to do anything at all. The words hit All Might and forced him to spring into action. Izuku, realizing the monster escaping was his fault, left with Shigaraki. He couldn't face Bakugo knowing this and after having his dreams crushed. Shigaraki then turned the conversation to Izuku's notes and his interest in seeing more of them.
The next week was spend going over his notes with Shigaraki in Kurogiri's bar. Izuku didn't realize someone else was listening in on them until the TV spoke. It was that weekend Giran was introduced to Izuku and offered him a part time job as a hero analyst. Working for Giran it didn't take long for Izuku to realize he was a villain broker. Izuku ran to Shigaraki with this information, only for his new friend to admit he was a villain.
Shigaraki told Izuku what his analyses were being used for. He told Izuku he would give him more money to stay and warned him that heroes had been injured due to the information given. He was culpable now and would get in trouble. Izuku had nowhere else to go so he submitted. Conflicted about what he was doing, he tried to justify his actions. He watched the news and saw heroes raising above the villains he had handed strategies too and realized he could help. If he could give the villains strategies that pushed the villains to be better, then he could help them beat the villains. Sure, it was roundabout and he knew it was. It was all he could come up with.
It was a month in that Izuku was introduced to Shigaraki's Master. The man on the TV told Izuku he had been watching him and wished to offer him something. If Izuku would agree to train under Shigaraki and learn to fight and improve himself, he would give Izuku a Quirk. Izuku didn't believe it at first but the man spoke with such conviction, he started to believe it was possible. Master told him he would be attending UA as their analyst, charged with taking and reporting on the teachers and students. If he did this, he could stay the entire three years and keep the Quirk for life.
Being offered his dream school and a Quirk, Izuku agreed.
The next nine months were hell for Izuku. The training was brutal and rigorous. He learned to fight hand to hand combat while researching heroes and villains alike. He was ordered to observe and create strategies for the villains being gathered by Shigaraki and Kurogiri. He sparred with several of them as well, learning to take down villains without his own Quirk. It was at the two month mark that Master decided to bestow the chosen Quirk upon Izuku; Quirk Battery.
The combat training was used to teach Izuku how to use his new Quirk. It took a full month for the kid to get used to his Quirk. Izuku couldn't control the Quirk at first, it would activate spontaneously, turning shadow's solid without his meaning to. It was during this training he discovered he had a limit to the quantity of shadows he could make solid. The more he made solid, the lighter he felt until he could barely move without feeling pain. At one point he turned so many shadows solid he ended up with a sprained ankle by taking a single step. He knew he would need to master the ratio of matter he could take from himself and put into the shadows to fight effectively but not cripple himself.
Eventually the day of the entrance exam came. Izuku used his quirk to turn his own shadow solid as well as the shadows in his clothes. Izuku ran inside and was unable to find a robot he could destroy until the massive boss appeared. When the giant robot arrived, he spotted the pinned Uraraka. He ran in fast and stretched out his shadow to touch the robots. He absorbed all of it and used the shadow to shoot spikes through the robot, destroying it and stopping its assault. The moment he finished, he passed out.
From there, Izuku was sure he had failed his mission. Then came the acceptance letter. Deku joined UA. The first day of school was still terrifying for Izuku as Aizawa-sensei threatened to expel him. He had to find a way to use his Quirk to throw a ball far without manifesting too much shadow. Finally he had an idea after his first one was interrupted and he was grabbed by the bandages of Aizawa-Sensei. He used the shadows in his clothes to construct a slingshot. He brought the ball back, using the limited shadows to create tension before he flung the ball over 700 meters. He glared at the teacher and told him he could control his Quirk. He overused it to ensure he could save someone and he would prove it.
From there, he continued taking notes on his classmates. The first day gave him plenty of information on the group that he could add to. Then came the USJ trip. Izuku was told about the attack ahead of time and was glad All Might apparently overworked his Quirk and didn't show. Of course, he knew that would piss Shigaraki off. Once Kurogiri separated the students from each other, he sent Izuku to the ship area with Froppy and Mineta. He was able to use some of the shadow of the boat and both Mineta and Tsuyu's shadows to send a large piece of metal into the water using the same slingshot technique from the first day in class. They escaped and Izuku moved to watch the fight. This wasn't the first time he had seen Shigaraki's monstrous nature but never like this. He watched Aizawa-Sensei being brutalized and nearly killed.
Then All Might arrived.
Izuku moved when told to by All Might to grab Aizawa and take his to safety. As they walked, Izuku knew this could be the end of All Might. He knew the heroes weakness but had never told anyone. He ran back to watch the fight. Despite himself, he tried to save All Might, being joined by Kirishima, Kaachan, and Todoroki. He watched as Shigaraki moved to kill All Might and he couldn't move. He couldn't stop Shigaraki. All Might was going to die. Then Bakugo launched himself forward and nearly died, time for the other pro heroes to arrive. Izuku watched Shigaraki being shot and nearly moved to help his friend. In the end, Shigaraki and Kurogiri escaped and he was glad. All Might lived and he was glad too.
It was then he realized Bakugo and All Might had not only met but overheard All Might talking about thanking Bakugo and training him during the end of middle school. Izuku was quiet the entire way back to UA. All Might was training Bakugo. Bakugo and All Might, the two people who ruined his dreams of being a hero were student and teacher. For the first time in his life, Izuku felt hatred toward Bakugo. He stole everything from him and Master gave it back. He would surpass Bakugo and show All Might he was wrong to choose his ex-friend.
During the sports festival, much went the same way. He managed to win first place in the race and they won barely during the chariot battle. Then during his fight with Shinsou, Izuku cheated to win. Kurogiri opened a portal inside his shirt and Shigaraki poked him hard enough to shatter the brainwashing. He turned and ran toward Shinsou. He grabbed the other hero, and touched Shinsou's shadow with his foot. He roared as he pushed and punched him right out of the arena. He would not be undone by someone like him. In the end, he was mad because Shinsou and his old self were too similar. He wasn't Deku, anymore. He was Izuku. He was not a hero. He was a spy. He was a Villain. At the last moment, he used the other teen's shadow to trip him up and throw him out of the ring.
He couldn't stop himself from trying to help Todoroki. Todoroki could be a good hero but his pain and hatred toward his Dad was blinding him. Izuku studied his notebook as he worked desperately to find a fighting strategy. Finally he came up with a gambit. He moved out to the arena and had one purpose in mind; force Todoroki to use his left side. When the first icy bast came his way, he used his quirk on his own shadow and the shadows in his clothes. He encased himself in shadows and let the ice hit. Then, using the shadows in the ice, he shot forth a long thin shadow that pierced outside the ice and touched the shadows outside. Using all the shadow he gathered, he shattered the ice. The fight was wild with ice lashing out at Izuku and black tendrils lashing out and shattering ice. Izuku couldn't move a muscle thanks to all of the shadows he had solidified. In the end, he surrounded himself an an armored suit of shadow and moved that way, using the shadows to maneuver rather than his own muscles. The right arm and helmet were shattered by delivering strong hits to Todoroki. In the end, Izuku's actions and words got through to Todoroki, who ignited his flames. Acting quickly, Izuku gathered the shadows from the fire. He created another sling shot, this one for himself. He shot himself up and over the ice from Todoroki. The shadows formed a bullet like shape as he flew toward Todoroki. The teachers attempted to stop the fight but Izuku's strategy shot through the cement walls and fire from Todoroki. In the end, barely any shadows were left and Izuku felt each impact from hitting the ground. The shadow bullet skid to a stop in front of Todoroki. Todoroki hesitated and Izuku stuck out with the shadows, hitting Todoroki out of the arena and he secured the victory, even with broken bones. Izuku then passed out.
Izuku was treated by Recovery Girl and went to face Iida in the next battle. Izuku used a more careful strategy to pin Iida between two walls of shadow before he let Iida get a kick on him. He pretended to be hurt but used the contact to slip shadows into Iida's engines and solidified the darkness. He then tripped the speedster and threw him out of the ring with a shadow tentacle. In the end, Izuku was in the finals with Bakugo. The fight was one of careful strategy. Izuku used the shadows in the crevices in the tiles of the arena. Each crack and imperfection was a shadow for him to take over secretly once the battle started. In the end, Izuku and Bakugo played a dangerous back and forth game with explosions and whipping shadows until Izuku got close enough to Bakugo, using shadows as shields, to trap the blond's hand in shadows and forced it into a fist. Like that, he couldn't use his explosions. He managed to trap the second hand as well but ran out of stamina for making more. The two ended with a slug fest against each other until both hit the other at the same time. Bakugo didn't fall. Izuku did. Izuku lost the battle and came in second.
The internship came next, once he was mostly healed. He couldn't pick a hero name during the presentations, so he simply put down Izuku. In the end, Shigaraki had made sure a hero they could bribe was his internship mentor. Izuku spent his week in the bar training with Shigaraki and their paid off hero. That was when he met The Hero Killer. Izuku didn't try to fight with Kurogiri and Shigaraki, instead watching and listening. He figured out the Killer had to ingest the blood to use his Quirk. He followed Shigaraki to Hoshu. He knew Iida was here and knew what would happen. He followed after the Hero Slayer and watched him attack Native. He didn't step in until Iida was nearly killed. Izuku launched himself into the alleyway and tackled Hero Killer. He started to draw on the man's Quirk before he leaped back to avoid a knife. He grabbed Iida next and looked down at his friend. He scolded Iida for trying this and used his phone to send a message out to the heroes around.
The fight with the Hero Killer went the same as canon. In the end, the Hero Killer's speech struck something deep inside Izuku. Stain's point of view and his bloodcurdling speech rendered Izuku silent until the hospital. It was there he agreed almost instantly to not being in the news for their part in the fight and to put it all on Endeavor. That night, Izuku didn't sleep. He tried to hold in laughter, something the other two chalked up to Izuku crying. He found his purpose. There were too many fake heroes, people who didn't deserve the title. He would push them out of the world of heroes by becoming a great villain. He would test and push heroes to be better, becoming a foil to good heroes and a source of terror to bad ones. He would fix the world, one hero at a time.
With his path set, Izuku returned to UA after the interships ended. The finals were coming up and to his own dismay, he was paired with Bakugo. Izuku's anger only grew then it was revealed he had to fight All Might of all people alongside Bakugo. The blond tried to speak with him before the match, but Izuku refused. He said he had better things to do and went to watch his classmates matches instead. He observed the other's matches but his commentary wasn't nearly as optimistic as usual. He heavily criticized the losers as not having the determination or drive to find the means of victory. He was proud of those who won and made mental notes of changes or hangups he observed. Then came time for his own match.
Izuku. being filled with a drive to prove he could stand up to even a hero like All Might, decided he would attempt to defeat his hero by himself. He ignored Bakugo's attempts at strategizing and ended up punching the blond in the face when Bakugo said he was being an idiot for not listening. Izuku, furious, told Kaachan he would defeat All Might on his own. He continued stating he especially didn't need the help of All Might's pet. Their argument was cut short when All Might appeared. Izuku lashed out and attacked, attempting to use Obtenebration to encase All Might in shadows to try and defeat him..
In the end, Izuku was no match for him. It was Bakugo who saved him from early elimination and whisked him away. They began to argue again in the alleyway until Izuku slammed his fist into the wall by Bakugo's head. The two stared each other down until Izuku relented to work together. They attempted to use the gauntlets against All Might. The first attack worked but the second was stopped by All Might. Izuku lashed out again, trying to beat All Might as he told Bakugo to run for the door. In the end, Izuku was knocked unconscious by All Might and Bakugo saved him. It was that moment All Might decided Bakugo would be his successor and his fear for Izuku grew. The rage and ferocity the small boy showed during the fight was so unlike the boy he met on the roof.
Izuku and Bakugo passed their finals but their relationship was still at a standstill. Despite Bakugp's attempts to talk and try to smooth things over, Izuku had managed to push him further away.
Soon after, Izuku agreed to go to the mall with the other students. It was during the visit Shigaraki grabbed Izuku while he was alone. Irritated by Izuku's lack of checking in and attention, he demanded to know what Izuku was up to. The two spoke privately. Shigaraki asked Izuku why everyone liked Stain and Izuku explained why he liked Stain. He explained why he also had adopted Stain's mentality and where he disagreed. He told Shigarki if he wanted to be like Stain, he needed to find something to believe in and follow that. This only reinforced Shigaraki's drive to kill All Might. It was Bakugo and Uraraka who found Izuku and Shigaraki, though neither didn't recognize the villain. Shigaraki left stating he didn't realize Izuku was there with a friend. Izuku tried to play off the incident as Izuku making a new friend but both felt something was wrong. Something about the man was familiar and the way Izuku behaved was wrong too.
Soon after was the training camp. It went mostly the same, save his fight with Muscular was over ethics rather than hero vs villain. Izuku managed to save Kota through a massive risk of using almost all his matter to form a massive wave of shadow that crushed Muscular into the mountain side. In the end, this left him badly injured but able to move. He knew why the villains were here the entire time. He knew they wanted Bakugo but in the end, he knew this plot would fail. Bakugo would never turn but he had given Dabi and Compress specific instructions to also kidnap Tokoyami for his own reasons. In the end, only Bakugo was captured and Izuku was taken to the hospital. He received treatment for his wounds and was approached by Kirishima and Todoroki to see if he would help them on their rescue mission.
Knowing he had to go to keep up the charade, he contacted Twice. The man snuck into the hospital and cloned Midoriya. The real Izuku slipped out while the clone remained and attended the rescue missing. Izuku attended the attempted turning of Bakugo in disguise, wearing a full body jumpsuit, gloves, and a helmet. He was captured with the rest of the League by Kaminari Woods and the other pro heroes. Yet they escaped, only to be pursued by All Might and the other heroes. During the battle, Izuku was forced to use his Obtenebration to block a kick from Gran Tarino. He had hoped All Might didn't see it and the hero didn't, but Bakugo did.
The rescue party managed to save Bakugo, using the clone's ability of Obtenebration, Iida's Engines, and Kaminari's hardening to rescue him. Despite seeing Izuku there, he was sure he wasn't the real one. He figured it out when he found a pile of mud outside police station. He called Iida and he confirmed Midoriya had separated from the group and disappeared. In the end, Bakugo didn't tell All Might when he came to visit about the dorms. Not even Izuku knew that Bakugo was aware of his betrayal. At least, he wasn't until the fight.
The two still met and fought like in canon, only the stakes were reversed. It wasn't just Bakugo who needed help, the blond wanted to save Midoriya. Izuku had no want or interest in being helped or saved. The two fought, unleashing pent up emotions and grudges until Izuku pinned Bakugo down with shadows and wrapped his hands around his neck. Izuku relented and used his hidden communicator to request a portal. He stepped into the swirling darkness and bid UA goodbye. He was no longer a spy or a student of UA. He was a traitor and he was a villain.
Quirk
Obtenebration: The quirk works through the transference of matter from Izuku into shadows. Doing so, Izuku is able to touch shadows and give them matter and weight to them. Once done, he can manipulate the shadows into solid, liquid, and gaseous forms. As long as he or his physical shadows touch another shadow, he can activate his quirk to absorb the new shadows into those already under his control, giving him more shadowstuff to work with. The drawback is the more shadows he draws in, the weaker physically he gets due to using his own matter to enforce the shadows. The shadows, once physical, can also be destroyed. If they are separated from the mass Izuku has created, they vanish completely. Eventually, Izuku learns to incorporate the shadows into his own matter, becoming a living shadow. While melted with the shadows, he can increase his speed and strength through absorbing more shadows into his matter, but the downside is this exhausts him quickly and will leave him unable to fight after only a few minutes.
